The least anonymous cat in America.
It started in a kitchen with a grocery bag and a hole cut for the nose. The cat had become tired of being photographed every time he sat in a window. Someone suggested a disguise. He accepted, provided nobody covered the food bowl.
By morning, the bag had been painted in stars and stripes. He walked out as if he had invented privacy. At the diner, the waitress recognized his collar. At the motel, the clerk recognized his habit of sitting on the room key. In the laundromat, he stared at his own reflection long enough to forget why he had come in.
He kept the bag anyway. Anonymous USA is that small, ridiculous contradiction: a cat hiding in plain sight, recognizable from the first glance, still enjoying the mystery of where he might turn up next.
